A short bio on the writer. (Or a longer version of my About page.)
So here's a little bit about myself:
I'm a 21-year-old senior at UNC-Chapel Hill majoring in English and Journalism and Mass Communication with a concentration in reporting. I graduated from Seventy-First High School in Fayetteville in June of 2009. My father has been in the Army since before I was born and has been active-duty JAG my entire life. I've lived in eight different states and three different countries during my time as an active-duty Army brat.
I'm currently a copy editor for The Daily Tar Heel, an independent, 119-year-old student-run newspaper serving UNC and the Chapel Hill community. I'm also a writer for Her Campus UNC, an online college women's magazine, an editor of an academic journal and a veterans affairs beat writer for the UNC School of Journalism. I worked for the Fort Bragg Paraglide as a staff writer, photographer, editor and layout artist during the same time I was a staff writer at the Fayetteville Observer. I was the co-editor, a writer and a photographer for the Carrboro Commons, an online community newspaper in Carrboro, NC. My work has been published by Army News and in a Tom Clancy novel.
My dream job would be to work in military journalism. I'd be thrilled to go back to working for a publication at the Observer, be it the Observer itself, the Paraglide or Elite Magazine, a monthly glossy magazine I'm currently in the stages doing freelance work for. I'm passionate about telling the military story and giving voices to the servicemembers, spouses and children. I'm driven to give back to the community that's given so much to me and I think the world needs to know the real story--beyond the obits and the casualty listings and the IED accounts. I have a desire to tell the truth about what happens in the camouflage world, and that's what I'm going to do.
Less professionally, I'm a huge bookworm and classic Disney fanatic in my spare time. I have a boyfriend of three years who I met in high school and who is a fellow Army brat. He's a math and physics double major at N.C. State University. I'm a frequent blogger about all things, but especially following my journalistic exploits at UNC and professionally.
